The Akatyst is one of the oldest hymns in honor of the Mother of God, whose history dates back to the 5th century, and its authorship is attributed to Saint Romanos the Melodist. Legend has it that the words and melody of the Akatyst were miraculously revealed to the saint. In his sleep, the Mother of God appeared to him, who gave him a scroll to eat. In the morning, Saint Romanos sang the content of the scroll. It was a hymn in honor of the Mother of God. It was first performed in 626 in Constantinople. The most faithful Polish translation of the Akatyst is considered to be that made in 1980 by Marian Father Sergiusz Jan Gajek.
The greatest merits in the return of the Akatyst to the liturgy are due to Saint John Paul II, who indicated this devotion, common to the Eastern and Western Churches, as a path that will lead to the unity of both Churches. In Jasna Góra, the Akatyst is a plea to the Mother of God for peace for the world. It has the character of a rosary prayer intertwined with its stanzas. The leitmotif of this hymn is the participation of the Mother of God in the earthly life of Jesus and Her presence in the Church. The Akatyst (which freely translated means I stand, standing) consists of 24 stanzas in two parts: the first, in which the stories from the life of Mary from the Annunciation to the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple are presented, and the second theological part, containing reflections on the divine and human nature of Christ and the virginity of Mary. It is always performed standing and always evokes strong emotions and religious experiences.
