However, the joy of liberation quickly gives way to a new terror, which for many turns out to be just as painful. The manor in a picturesque valley, which for generations has provided its inhabitants with a prosperous life, becomes just a larger farm. The mill is nationalized, and the old world irretrievably passes into the past. The former owners, having no other choice, must adapt to the imposed system, regardless of their beliefs and dislikes.

Adela and Kajetan Konarscy, the parents of two sons born just after the war, do not experience major worries from them. However, their daughter Marcelina, who was born when they were both over forty, causes them a lot of trouble. When, on the eve of the fall of communism, Marcelina puts on a white dress, the parents feel relieved, believing that marriage will finally end her unpredictability and tame her rebellious character. Unfortunately, when the car carrying the young people to the wedding suddenly stops halfway, the future is once again in question.
