IN LOVE - ALFRED HAYES

Discover the cold and poignant vivisection of lost love in Alfred Hayes' novel "In Love". This story, which begins without reason and ends without cause, transports the reader to the lonely scenes of a New York hotel, reminiscent of Edward Hopper's paintings. Hayes' crystal-clear prose, both tender and cruel, draws the reader into the world of the narrator, who shares his memories in a bar.

  • Lost love: A deep analysis of the feelings and emotions associated with a love that passes.
  • New York atmosphere: Penetrating descriptions of the scenery that capture the atmosphere of the city.
  • Crystal clear prose: A beautiful and precise language that touches and remains in memory.
  • Loneliness: Reflections on loneliness and isolation in human life.
  • Universal message: Themes that concern everyone who has experienced love and loss.

Alfred Hayes (1911-1985) is an extremely interesting figure. He was born into a poor Jewish family in London's East End and later emigrated to America. His life was full of challenges and diverse experiences - he worked as a waiter, smuggler and errand boy. Despite the difficulties, he found his passion for writing, although he felt more comfortable on the racetracks than in the literary cafes of Greenwich Village. During World War II, he was stationed in Rome, which allowed him to get to know Italy and inspired him to further work.

Hayes co-authored the screenplay for Roberto Rossellini's film "Paisà", working with Klaus Mann and Federico Fellini. He also worked on the screenplay for "Bicycle Thieves" by Vittorio De Sica. For four decades he wrote for Hollywood, often remaining in the shadow of other creators. He collaborated with directors such as Fritz Lang and John Huston, and wrote screenplays for numerous episodes of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".

Based on his own novel "The Girl on the Via Flaminia", he wrote the screenplay for the film "Their Great Love", in which Brigitte Bardot starred alongside Kirk Douglas. Alfred Hayes died in 1985 and is now being rediscovered as a writer whose work deserves attention and recognition. The novel "In Love" is an excellent example of his talent and ability to keenly observe human emotions.
