The Spartan army was the only professional army of ancient Greece, which made it an elite formation. State institutions and the education system were entirely subordinated to the creation of perfectly trained soldiers. Isocrates compared the Spartan state to a military camp, emphasizing the rigor and discipline prevailing in Sparta.

Aristotle criticized the Spartan system for concentrating solely on cultivating military virtues. In his opinion, after conquering the empire, the Spartans could not live in peace, which led to conflicts and wars. Despite the criticism, the Spartan army remains a symbol of courage and dedication to the homeland.

During one of the campaigns against Thebes, Sparta's allies began to question its contribution to the war. King Agesilaos then organized a demonstration showing that Sparta provided more soldiers than all its allies combined. The Lacedaemonians did not engage in any peaceful professions, but their entire lives were devoted to military service.
