Egypt, located at the junction of Africa and Asia, near Southern Europe, and in the center of the conflict-prone Arab Middle East, controlling the Suez Canal and bordering Palestine, is a state of significant geopolitical and geostrategic importance. Its role in the regional balance of power, its contribution to maintaining the status quo (i.e., relative stability in the region thanks to the peace treaty and cooperation with Israel), and the political, economic, and military interests of global and European powers make Egypt a key player on the international stage.
The transformations that took place in Egypt after 1952 significantly changed the situation not only in that country but also influenced the shape of the regional international system (especially the Arab world), and many consequences of those events also affected the policies of the great powers in the Middle East. All this makes the study of great power aspirations in Egypt's foreign policy essential for understanding the processes taking place in this part of the world, both historically and contemporarily.
Dr. Jolanta Sierańska's publication is an interesting and courageous attempt to fill the gap in Polish scientific output, as the interest of researchers in Egyptian foreign and domestic policy is marginal. The exception is publications that appeared after 2011 in the context of analyzing the process of socio-political changes in the Arab world (the so-called Arab Spring). However, even in this case, the authors focused primarily on issues related to domestic policy, and to a much lesser extent or not at all on Egypt's foreign policy. It should be clearly emphasized that there is no Polish-language monograph to date devoted entirely to the analysis of Egyptian foreign policy.
