In the West, the Americans, supported by other armies, drove the Germans out of more countries and gave the nations living there the opportunity to choose their governments. In the East, on the other hand, the Russians, after driving out the Germans, installed communist governments established by them in more countries. The West regained its freedom, while the East fell into new enslavement. This is a crucial difference that defined the post-war history of Europe.
