Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the Zakopane bohemia of the 1930s, where decadence intertwines with the intellectual brilliance of pre-war Poland. This novel is a journey through the life and work of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, one of the most controversial artists, playwrights, and philosophers of that era. Discover the secrets of his daily life, struggles with the reality of the time, and artistic passion.
The action of the book allows you to look behind the curtains of time of the thirties of the life of the Zakopane bohemia, called by many decadence, as well as the circles of intellectual prosperity of pre-war Poland. Characters who actually lived then, and often unknown or forgotten people, mingle with prominent people such as Słonimski, Gombrowicz, Boy-Żeleński, Tatarkiewicz, and of course Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, who is one of the main characters of the book. A lot of works have been written about this highly controversial artist, playwright and philosopher, but the number of fictionalized items regarding his everyday life, struggling with the reality of the time or working as an artist is limited to just a few titles.
Against the background of the last six years of Witkacy's life, one of his highly publicized models, unknown to the general public, is resurrected here. It is Genia Wyszomirska (the author's grandmother), also known as the "Asymmetric Lady." She left her grandson a wealth of information about her connections with Witkacy and the rest of the intellectual elite of the pre-war years, which the author shares with the reader. The novel reflects the mood of the era with a large dose of humor, descriptions of the beauty of the Tatra Mountains, as well as a touch of discreet eroticism. There is also an attempt to defuse the established and often harmful patterns of evaluation of the Zakopane environment of that time. It should also be emphasized that the book is maintained in the linguistic style of those years and written in the structure of a film script.
