When in 1999 the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that every child has the right to know who their parents are, new clients began knocking on the door of Enrique Vili Torres' law office. Although they learned from family or neighbors that they had been adopted, there was no trace of adoption in their documents, and in the birth certificates the adoptive parents were listed as biological parents. Enrique called them hijos falsos, false children, and estimated their number at around three hundred thousand.

Soon, parents who were looking for children they had previously thought were dead also began contacting lawyers and the media. A new, terrifying term appeared: bebes robados, stolen children. In the sixties and seventies, a newborn child could be bought for the equivalent of an apartment. State and church institutions were involved in the sales scheme. Katarzyna Kobylarczyk describes one of the most shocking chapters in recent Spanish history, still full of unanswered questions.

Katarzyna Kobylarczyk goes beyond the framework of investigative reporting and boldly draws a picture of a large, patriarchal structure in which a woman, her rights and her well-being have no chance of colliding with the authority of a priest, a doctor, a man. The laconic, cool language of this moving book allows the true horror that the confrontation with the facts brings to readers to resonate well. How was that possible? This book is not only an investigative report, but also a deep reflection on the mechanisms of power and the social conditions that led to the tragedy of thousands of families. It is a must-read for all who want to understand modern Spain and its difficult past.
