Florentyna and Konstanty Zabierzyński, the main characters, barely had time to enjoy freedom in reborn Poland when dark clouds of another war gathered over their heads. In addition, four daughters entering adulthood present them with new challenges. The oldest, Wiktoria, follows in her mother's footsteps, settling with her husband on a nearby estate. Twins Maria and Zofia want to conquer the world. Zofia travels to eastern Poland, where she miraculously escapes death during the Volhynia massacre in 1943. Maria, on the other hand, falls in love with a German Gestapo officer, which becomes a source of family conflicts. The youngest, Wanda, surprises everyone by introducing a staunch communist as her fiancé, who begins to dig dangerously into the family's past.

In the face of so many difficulties, will the Zabierzyński family be able to understand each other, trust each other and continue to love each other? How will they cope with post-war scars and find themselves in the new reality? Will conflicts and differences nullify love and mutual dedication? Will the Zabierzyńskis survive, maneuvering in the labyrinth of difficult emotions caused by the turmoil of war? This novel is not only a family chronicle, but also a testament to the era in which they had to live.

The author renders the realities of life in interwar Poland with extraordinary precision, portraying both the life of the landed gentry and the everyday worries of ordinary people. War and occupation, the Volhynia massacre, the Warsaw Uprising, and finally the post-war reality - all this forms the background for the fate of the Zabierzyński family, which must face difficult choices and the consequences of its decisions. This novel is a moving story about the strength of a family that must survive the most difficult trials, and about the price one pays for freedom.
