Drago Janar, born in 1948, is a Slovenian writer, playwright and essayist, considered one of the most important contemporary Central European authors. His works, translated into many languages, are milestones of Slovenian prose. Janar is a lawyer by training and worked as an editor and was associated with the Slovenska matica cultural and scientific association in Ljubljana.
A laureate of numerous literary awards, including the Austrian State Prize for European Literature, Janar in his essays with insight and courage analyzes the contemporary condition of man and society. His protagonists are passionate figures, torn by fate, entangled in history and chance. The book contains older essays such as "Atlas" as well as completely new ones such as the essay "Archipelago Yugoslavia", which refers directly to "Memories of Yugoslavia" - and as current as the essay "Terrible Revenge", which records Janar's reflections from the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"Archipelagi" is a journey not only between the islands of the Yugoslav "archipelago", but also to the Bosphorus, to the fields of Flanders or to Trieste. It is also a journey in time - to Maribor in childhood, to the misty shores of Lake Bohinj, which can tell more than one story, but also to the besieged Vukovar of the early 90s, to the Austrian Galicia of Joseph Roth or to the worlds of Ivo Andric and James Joyce. An ideal book for lovers of Central European literature and reflections on today's world.
