Against the backdrop of the picturesque landscapes of the Niemen River, we follow the fate of Justyna Orzelska, a young woman seeking meaning and dignity, and Jan Bohatyrowicz, a representative of the landed gentry, living according to the ideals of honesty and patriotism. Their relationship becomes the axis of the plot, but also a metaphor for reconciliation between classes, generations and worldviews. This meeting of two worlds - the gentry and the people - is not only a love story, but also a project of a common future that can only be built on the foundation of mutual respect and work.

The graves of insurgents in the forest on the Niemen River become a place of memory, but also of conscience - they remind us of those who gave their lives for freedom, and whose sacrifice is still waiting for spiritual fulfillment by future generations. The advantage of the novel is the descriptions of nature. The Niemen River, fields, forests, harvests, dawn and dusk - all this pulsates with life, harmonizes with the emotions of the characters and builds a deeply symbolic dimension of the work. The language of the novel - plastic, suggestive, rhythmic - creates a unique atmosphere in which the reader immerses himself like in a river current, letting himself be carried away by the beauty and wisdom of the text.
