The plot of the novel takes place on two time levels. In the present, Małgorzata, fleeing from a marital crisis, returns to her hometown of Hrubieszów to take care of her sick grandmother. Returning to her family home awakens old fears and feelings of abandonment in her. One day, her grandmother begins to recall the war times and reveals deeply hidden family secrets to her granddaughter. Will learning about family history help Małgorzata understand herself?
In parallel, we learn the story of Jaś, an eleven-year-old boy from a Polish-Ukrainian family who, in April 1943, flees from a burning village in Volhynia. His destination is the Gniazdo Sierot in Turkowice, an orphanage run by nuns who, in inhuman times of war, cared for Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish children. Ewelina Miśkiewicz takes up this true story to find hope for love, goodness and forgiveness in the darkness of hatred and death.
