- Insightful look at Hungarian politics after 1984
- History of the Soros Foundation and its impact on Hungary
- Portrait of two prominent figures in the Hungarian political scene
- Reflection on the costs of selfless help
This book tells the story of two outstanding Hungarian personalities with extraordinary talent. One of them is several decades older than the other, but it can be said that they are peers. Their paths have crossed many times. There were times when it seemed they could work together. The older of them, George Soros, appeared in Hungarian politics in 1984 as an adult, rich and powerful, full of plans for social change. He quickly came to an agreement with the party and state leaders and founded the Soros Foundation, which has since become known worldwide (I was one of his first collaborators). The younger, Viktor Orbn, entered Hungarian politics at the end of the decade and immediately became the leader of the forces for regime change, the embodiment of the hopes of those who wanted a new, democratic Hungary. Soros also immediately saw his future and supported him with studies abroad.
However, as the author shows, Orban quickly realized that selfless help comes at a price. As a member of parliament and chairman of Fidesz, he resigned from further support from Soros, choosing independence and his own political path. This book is a fascinating story about choices, ideas, and consequences that have shaped modern Hungary.
Gabor Fodor, a well-known Hungarian politician and publicist, analyzes the relationship between Orban and Soros with extraordinary precision and insight, showing the complexity of their mutual interactions. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and the mechanisms of power.
