Gdansk, located on the Gdansk Bay at the mouth of the Vistula River to the Baltic Sea, has been one of the richest cities of the Republic of Poland for centuries. Its origins date back to the times of Mieszko I, who in the years 967-972 conquered this part of Pomerania. In the place of today's Long Market, in the fork of the Motława River flowing into the Dead Vistula, he founded a stronghold with a port harbor. The name of the settlement 'Gyddanzyc', recorded for the first time in the 'Life of St. Adalbert', was derived from the word used by the Prussians to describe the Motława River. Its core 'gd' meant mud or moisture.

During the Piast dynasty, Gdansk's relations with Poland were turbulent. The fragmentation of the state into principalities did not favor maintaining ties with Pomerania.
