Georges Bataille, born in 1897, is an extremely complex figure. On the one hand, a librarian, on the other - a metaphysician of evil, fascinated by death, suffering and human sacrifice. His "History of Eroticism", which belongs to the inedited works from 1950-1951, is not a scandalous work, but an essay on "general economy" in the specific, broad sense of the term, given to it by Bataille himself. It is the attempts of "transgression", i.e. crossing the established prohibitions, that constitute the essence of the history of eroticism.
Bataille's book is basically a historical essay, but also an "erotic phenomenology". The author analyzes with passion and freshness topics such as excrement, purity, nudity, object of desire and marriage. It is important to remember that this librarian used to visit Parisian brothels after work, which certainly influenced his perception of eroticism.
Eroticism, according to Bataille, is an aspect of inner life, no less spiritual than religious life. The dialectic of eroticism consists in the fact that it is a human function, as long as sexuality is restricted by prohibitions. Without them, without such "resistance", it remains an ordinary, "free" animal sexuality. It is this struggle against prohibitions and the attempt to overcome them that shapes the history of eroticism, and Bataille takes us through this fascinating journey with extraordinary precision and erudition.
