Being held with members of the NSDAP and SS touched her in a special way. She belonged to the National Socialist German Nurses Association, but never supported Hitler. In Auschwitz, she risked her life to save prisoners, secretly delivered messages and cooperated with the resistance. The prisoners who came into contact with her called her mother. Released from the camp thanks to the testimonies of prisoners, including one of the leaders of the resistance in Auschwitz, Józef Cyrankiewicz, she returned to Austria.

Highly respected in Poland, completely forgotten in her homeland, she remained friends until the end of her life with many people who survived the hell of the camp thanks to her. The German historian Harald Walser was the first to create an expressive portrait of Maria Stromberger and her extraordinary, fascinating life, supported by many documents. This book is not only a biography, but also a testament to the steadfastness of the spirit and the power of humanity in the face of extreme conditions.
