More than 30 years after the publication of Paul Ricoeur's most important collection of texts, "Language, Text, Interpretation," this book presents the entire volume "Hermeneutics and Social Sciences. Essays on Language, Action, and Interpretation." Thanks to the esteemed translations of Piotr Graff, supplemented by new, excellent translations by Joanna Bednarek, the reader receives a classic form consistent with the author's original intention.

Among the previously untranslated texts in the first part, we find two fundamental essays: "Hermeneutics and the Critique of Ideology" and "Phenomenology and Hermeneutics." The second essay is particularly important because it shows the significant transformations of hermeneutics and its close connection with phenomenology, which is not always clear. In the second part, there is a new chapter "What is a Text? Explaining and Understanding," where Ricoeur presents a hermeneutically understood theory of the text, which can be an important competition for structural-semiotic theory. The author convincingly shows that the traditional opposition of explanation and understanding should be seriously revised.

Ricoeur develops the problems concerning the text in the third part of the book, which is completely new to the Polish reader. In this part, the author expresses his broad philosophical and scientific interests, focusing on the interpretation of the narrative function. This book is not only a collection of essays but, above all, an invitation to deep reflection on language, action, and interpretation in the context of the social sciences.
