Isaac Bashevis Singer, the only Nobel laureate in literature for works written in Yiddish, is a master of short form. In this edition of the National Library you will find thirty-six stories translated from the original. Thanks to this, the Polish reader has the opportunity to get acquainted with the full richness of Singer's language, supplemented with details omitted in translations from English versions. Singer was an excellent stylist, had an extraordinary ear for language and masterfully used the rich idioms of Yiddish. Among the stories included in the volume there are also works that have not yet been translated into any language.

The number of texts selected by the authors of the study refers to the Jewish legend of the Lamedvovniks, the thirty-six righteous people in each generation - these are modest people who remain hidden, thanks to whom the world can exist. This representative selection gives an idea of the diversity of Singer's works, starting from monologues of simple inhabitants of shtetls, even demons, through humorous stories inspired by Jewish folklore, to moving texts that speak indirectly about the Shoah. There are both autobiographical stories, set in Polish-Jewish history, and fantastic ones, going beyond place and time, showing human passions and desires.

Most of the stories are published in translations by Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska and Mariusz Lubyk, and some of them in the translation by Michał Friedman. The hardcover edition, 129x171 mm format, from 2024 is a real treat for lovers of Jewish literature and the work of Isaac Bashevis Singer. Let yourself be carried away into the world of extraordinary stories that will remain in your memory for a long time.
