Jacek Woroniecki OP (1879-1949) was an outstanding Polish philosopher, theologian and pedagogue. His works are characterized by an in-depth analysis of social and cultural problems, set in the context of Catholic social teaching. Woroniecki was a supporter of personalism and a critic of all forms of totalitarianism, both state and ideological. In his writings, he emphasized the importance of the freedom of the individual, the family and local communities in shaping society.
In this book, the author focuses on the analysis of statist tendencies in the Polish education system of the interwar period. Woroniecki argues that excessive state control over education leads to a restriction of the freedom of teachers, students and parents, as well as to a uniformization of teaching content and ideological indoctrination. The author calls for the need to socialize and de-statize education, i.e. to transfer responsibility for education to local communities and non-governmental organizations.
Woroniecki uses strong formulations such as "totalitarianism" and "total education" to describe the negative effects of cultural statism. In his opinion, the state should not strive to take over all the educational functions of the family and society, as this leads to a restriction of the freedom and development of the individual. The author promotes the idea of a private, free and community-managed education system that would only be reasonably dependent on the state.
The book "State and School. A Treatise on Cultural Statism" is an extremely important voice in the discussion about the role of the state in education and culture. The relevance of Woroniecki's theses is striking, especially in the context of contemporary tendencies towards centralization and uniformization of education. A must-read for anyone interested in the issues of education, social philosophy and Polish history.
