Jaroslav Hašek (1883-1923) is an extremely colorful and controversial figure. In addition to writing, he was involved in satire, performed in cabarets and co-founded the artistic group Anarchist Destroyers. During World War I, he served in the army and later in the Red Army. He even founded the Party of Moderate Progress within the Limits of the Law and collaborated with a magazine on zoological topics, inventing non-existent animals. His life was full of adventures and extraordinary events, which was reflected in his work.
In this volume you will find a selection of short stories that show Hašek as a master of the short form. His texts are full of humor, but also deep reflection on the human condition. The author portrays his characters with extraordinary precision, showing their weaknesses, dreams and aspirations. Reading these stories, one gets the impression that little has changed since Hašek's times - human flaws and absurdities of life are still relevant.
The title "The Disappearance of the Deputy" is a story about a politician who disappeared after the elections. The inhabitants of the town, who believed in his promises, feel cheated and forgotten. Hašek in his style exposes the mechanisms of power and reveals the hypocrisy of politicians. This short story, although written many years ago, still surprises with its topicality and accuracy of observations.
