Johannes-Dieter Steinert's book "Deportation and Forced Labor. Children from Poland..." is an insightful study of the fate of children from Poland and the Soviet Union who, during World War II, were deported to Nazi Germany and forced into forced labor. Based on years of research in German and foreign archives, the author presents a detailed picture of the brutal treatment, tragic living and working conditions, and the connection between child forced labor and occupation and Germanization policies.

The author describes the participation of military and civilian authorities in the organization of deportations and forced labor, emphasizing that children considered subhumans experienced unimaginable suffering. They were employed in Wehrmacht and SS repair shops, in the construction of infrastructure, barracks, airports or fortifications, for the Todt Organization and the German Eastern Railways, but also in mines, industry, agriculture and crafts, and even as servants in households.

The author pays particular attention to the accounts of the victims themselves, whose childhood was marked by the tragic experiences of deportation and forced labor. Their memories are a shocking testimony to the cruelty of war and the indomitable human spirit. This book is a tribute to their memory and a warning to future generations.
