This monograph analyzes in detail the remarkable similarities of turns and motifs that appear both in Pervigilium Veneris and in the poetry of Nemesianus. Thanks to this, the author confirms Monceaux's thesis, suggesting that the author of the poem could have been Nemesianus, a Carthaginian poet active in the 3rd century AD. This groundbreaking discovery sheds new light on the historical and literary context of this anonymous work.
The author also focuses on the techniques of portraying the goddesses Diana and Venus and the sisters Philomela and Procne, comparing them with prefigurations contained in the poems of, among others, Lucretius, Catullus, Statius and Nemesianus. This is a deep comparative analysis that allows a better understanding of the symbolism and meaning of these figures in ancient literature. This book is the result of research supported by funds granted under the Research Excellence Initiative program of the University of Silesia in Katowice, which guarantees its high scientific level and reliability.
The subject of reflection are also the enigmatic words Terei puella and Illa cantat, nos tacemus, which refer to the motif of women's silence, strongly emphasized in ancient literature. The author analyzes how this motif is presented in Pervigilium Veneris and what significance it has for the interpretation of the entire poem. This is a fascinating journey through the world of ancient literature, which will certainly interest all lovers of classics and literary history. This book is a valuable source of knowledge for students, researchers and all those interested in ancient literature and its influence on European culture.
