Maria Konopka, a retired research worker at the Institute of Scientific Information and Library Science of the Pedagogical University of KEN, devoted her career to studying the history of the publishing movement and the history of Galician bookselling. Her particular attention was focused on the Polish publishing market in Lviv in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This publication is the result of her many years of research and passion for the history of the book.
The Franciszek H. Richter bookstore, founded in Lviv in 1866, became an important cultural center and intellectual center of the city. Throughout its years of operation, the bookstore cooperated with many outstanding authors and publishers, contributing to the development of Polish literature and culture. Her successors, the Altenbergs, continued it until 1934, preserving the traditions and values of the founder.
