Polish visual culture is still a poorly recognized and undervalued area. The image historically gives way to the meaning of the word, rarely becoming the subject of theoretical considerations. The visual competences of Polish society are usually rated low, and its practices are sometimes described as aesthetic poverty, excess or boredom. The two-volume collection, including source texts and images (from Abramowski to Hansen, from Rydet to Leśmian) with commentaries and original entries on viewing practices (from image to audience, from billboard to melodrama, from Palace to fake), is an attempt to confront these prejudices. However, it is not to restore outstanding overlooked works to art history, but rather to see in the complaints about the visual shortcomings of Poles an essential element of Polish visual culture, which is complex, ambiguous, multidimensional, mixing registers, genres and media.
The authors try not only to present, but also to build a vision of the theory and practice of visual culture in modern Poland. The intention of the study was to recognize the resources and potential of Polish reflection on seeing, conducted primarily in the 20th century, but also rooted in 19th-century texts and practices, and to try to reflect on them in the context of the language of the discipline, which is visual culture studies, and the forms and problems of contemporary Polish culture. How did people in Poland think about seeing, images and audiences? What artistic activities served to express and problematize these issues? How are seeing and imaging practiced on a daily basis, how have they manifested themselves and how do they manifest themselves in everyday activities?
