FEUDAL MONARCHY IN THE KINGDOM OF JERUSALEM - LA MONTE JOHN L.

Discover the fascinating history of institutions operating in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, analyzed through the prism of political changes and relationships with various social groups. This book is a thorough analysis of the feudal monarchy in one of the most strategic places in history.

  • Detailed analysis of political changes in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
  • Chronological division into three periods: 1100-1174, 1174-1210, 1210-1291.
  • Comprehensive discussion of administration, judiciary, and military system.
  • Analysis of relations between the kings of Jerusalem and vassals, counts, princes, knightly orders, and city communes.
  • Assessment of the impact of individual groups and institutions on the stability of the monarchy.

This work aims to study the institutions operating in the Kingdom of Jerusalem as a whole. The author focuses on analyzing the most important political changes in the kingdom itself, presenting them in chronological order. The history of the kingdom has been divided into three periods: the first kingdom in the years 1100-1174, the transitional years from 1174 to 1210, and the history of the second kingdom in the years 1210-1291. During the first two periods, the historical background of the Assises was outlined, while the third shows the use of laws in the actual history of the state system.

The second part of the work contains chapters devoted to the most important aspects related to administration: the highest and lower judicial bodies, the chancellery and the most important offices, the military system, and financial management. The author analyzes the relations of the kings of Jerusalem with vassals, the counts of Tripoli and Edessa, and the princes of Antioch, their overlord, the pope, patriarchs, knightly orders of Hospitallers, Templars and Teutonic Knights, and the city communes of Italy and Provence, who founded their colonies in the port cities of Outremer and played such an important role in the political and economic life of the Latin states.

The author hopes that in the part devoted to institutions, he managed to shed some light on new facts regarding the governance of the kingdom. Most of the sources used in the work are not new, but they are so scattered that a single study aimed at covering the entire subject of research seems to be a reasonable undertaking.
