The book by Krzysztof R. Kowalczyński "Łódź 1915-1918. Time of Hunger and Hope" is a publication that fills a gap in the available studies on the history of Łódź. The author describes the life of the inhabitants of Łódź from the moment the city was occupied by German troops until the last days of the occupation. This almost four-year period left a deep mark on the history of the city. The information in the book is presented in the form of a chronology, supplemented by descriptions of the most important events.

In 1917, thanks to the joint efforts of the inhabitants of Łódź, the Public Library was opened, which was soon maintained by the city. There were theaters and cinemas showing the latest European and American films. Famous Polish actors performed on the stages of Łódź: Pola Negri, Konrad Tom, Karol Adwentowicz, Ludwik Solski, Kazimierz Junosza-Stępowski. Songs by Andrzej Włast were sung and sketches by Julian Tuwim were performed. It was then, during the musical evenings for schoolchildren, that the famous, musical Bacewicz siblings made their debut.

The author also describes the everyday life of the inhabitants who, despite the occupation, tried to live normally. This difficult, but also interesting, wartime period in the history of the city was also captured in numerous photographs and postcards that enrich the publication. Reading it will allow the reader to better understand the problems of the functioning of the city of Łódź during World War I. This is a must-read for every lover of the history of Łódź!
