- Well-constructed political play and poetic mystery
In the background of the drama lurks the pogrom of the Pinsk Jews, carried out on the orders of a Polish major, and the Polesians, the native inhabitants of Polesie, entangled in the conflict of larger nations, also appear. The author introduces a minority perspective to the history of the Poles' struggle for independence, without focusing on the suffering of the weaker ones. The central point is the love of Andrzej and Ruta, a Pole and a Jew, the son of an anti-Semite and the daughter of an orthodox rabbi. Young people do not want to live in a world ruled by old hostility and want to escape it or act according to other rules.
Their romance does not end happily, but the stake in the game is the transformation of the consciousness of the young generation, which rejects the inherited mentality. Ruta incites rebellion, but the responsibility for change rests with Andrzej. He is the one who will hear the prophecy from the haunted Ben: "You will believe in the men who rebel against the world because they know that the world is sick." The author's style is characterized by irony, which allows her to communicate the need for a romantic revolution in a way that is accessible to the modern recipient.
"Brylant" is a work that combines the features of a melodrama, a political play, and a poetic mystery. It is a story about love that becomes a symbol of hope for a better tomorrow, about the courage to stand up to prejudice, and about the power of youthful idealism. It is a read that encourages reflection on one's own beliefs and on the world in which we live. The Teatr Instytut presents this edition in hardcover, comprising 87 pages, in the format 152x213 mm, published in 2023.
