We are transported to Colombo in 1990, where a brutal civil war is raging. Maali Almeida, a war photographer, gambler and traitor, is killed. His soul ends up in an absurd office in the afterlife, where he is given seven days to solve the mystery of his death and close unfinished business.

Maali's search leads through his tangled relationships, his complicated relationship with his mother, and the landscape of a country ravaged by civil war. As a photographer whose photos have the power to overthrow governments and prevent wars, Maali has enemies everywhere - from government henchmen to Tamil Tigers to revolutionaries. Who is behind his death? Will Maali be able to uncover the truth before it's too late?
