"Manufaktura Snów" is a publication that, in essence, is the first in Polish writing to attempt to outline the history of surrealism in 20th-century Polish poetry. The author does not limit herself to phenomena and names that we traditionally associate with the concept of surrealism, but tries to capture the continuity of certain processes initiated in the 1920s. This is a bold and innovative undertaking, burdened with a certain risk, but necessary to oppose stereotypical views.
The book provides a valuable comparative analysis of the works of French and Polish surrealists, showing the immense richness of imagination, associations, metaphors, and juxtapositions. The author is interested in Polish poetic surrealism of the pre-war and post-war periods in close connection with its source - French surrealism. This is new comparative information that enriches the existing knowledge about this trend in art and literature.
In her book, Marta Cywińska does not definitively judge the time frames of surrealism à la polonaise, but leads to its definition as a metaphor for changes in culture, literature, and art of the 20th century. The question of the extent of the influence of surrealism on Polish poetry is also a question of the audience and the shaping of the horizon of expectations for new artistic and literary messages.
The publication contains new interpretations of well-known texts by Jan Brzękowski, Aleksander Wat, Adam Ważyk, Anatol Stern, as well as Józef Czechowicz and the early Czesław Miłosz, i.e. the creators of the avant-garde, futurism, and also the creators of the so-called II avant-garde. This is an original and particularly interesting look at the work of these outstanding artists.
