Gladioli require a sunny and sheltered location. They prefer fertile, humus-rich soil, rich in nutrients (compost, manure, mineral fertilizers), with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. We plant them between April and May at a distance of approx. 8-10 cm at a depth of 8-10 cm, on heavy soils we plant them a little deeper. Gladioli planted too shallow may be exposed to water shortage, as well as more easily broken in windy weather.
In dry periods, gladioli require watering. Gladiolus bulbs are not frost-resistant, so they need to be dug up before the first frosts. On poorer soils, we fertilize them every 2-3 weeks with multi-component fertilizers, the last time at the beginning of flowering. Lushly growing inflorescences require support. We dig up the bulbs in the second half of September and in October. After digging up, we cut off the shoots and dry them for a few days in a ventilated room or in the sun. After drying, the bulb should be cleaned. Over the winter, we store them in a cool, well-ventilated place at a temperature of about 5 degrees Celsius.
