INTERCULTURAL OLYMPIC EDUCATION

The book "Intercultural Olympic Education. Completion of the Pedagogical Symphony of Pierre de Coubertin" is a fascinating journey into the world of Olympic ideas and their impact on contemporary education. The authors, Katarzyna Płoszaj and Wiesław Firek, undertake the task of completing the pedagogical "symphony" of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. It is an inspiring read for educators, athletes, and anyone interested in personal and social development.

Pierre de Coubertin (1863–1937) through his writing and organizational activities created a pedagogical “symphony” consisting of two parts: the Olympic Games and educational reform. The first of them “soared through the world like a shining airship,” the second (unfinished) “made its way like a mole.” The title of the book suggests that if contemporary Olympic education takes into account the postulates of intercultural pedagogy, it will complete this pedagogical “symphony.” The term “intercultural Olympic education” proposed by the Authors is intended to emphasize that Olympic education is already in its essence, and especially due to the historical intentions of the creator of Olympism – Pierre de Coubertin – must be intercultural.

A hundred years ago, the restorer of the Olympic Games did not yet use this term, because it was developed in the field of pedagogy only in the second half of the 20th century. The authors use them because interculturality is a conditio sine qua non of Olympic education. It does not matter whether it is implemented at the global level during the Games or in a small school in the province during physical education lessons. Wherever the Olympic flag flies, the spirit of mutual respect for cultural differences and concern for one's national identity should float. This publication makes an important contribution to the development of sports and Olympic pedagogy, offering new perspectives and inspirations for educational practitioners and theorists.

Katarzyna Płoszaj – pedagogue, doctor of physical culture sciences. In their work, the authors combine theory with practice, offering the reader a comprehensive view of the issues of Olympic education in the context of contemporary challenges and opportunities.

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the deeper meaning of Olympic ideas and their importance for the development of society. It is an inspiring journey into the world of values that can shape future generations. With this publication, the reader gains new tools and perspectives that can be used in educational and sports practice. This book is a valuable source of knowledge and inspiration for all who believe in the power of education and sport as tools for personal and social development. It is extremely important that the authors undertake the analysis of Pierre de Coubertin's work, showing his contribution to the development of pedagogy and sport.
