Rudolf Reder was born in Dębica into a Jewish family. He was the son of Herman and Fryderyka née Jortner. He attended the gymnasium in Dębica. Together with his brothers, he traveled to the United States, where he worked in chemical plants in Chicago, becoming a specialist in soap production. In 1919 he returned to Poland and founded a soap factory in Lviv.
After the outbreak of World War II, he remained in Lviv. After the start of the German occupation, he was imprisoned in the ghetto. In August 1942, during the so-called great action, he was arrested and deported to the extermination camp in Bełżec. Thanks to his knowledge of German and posing as a machinist-fitter, he avoided immediate death in the gas chamber. He spent three months in Bełżec, working in the extermination area and witnessing the genocide.
