The life of Moshe Ibn Ezra is a story of successes and disappointments. The first half of his life, marked by prosperity and intellectual flights in Granada, is reflected in the virtuoso courtly lyrics. The second half, spent in exile, was filled with longing and bitterness. During this time, elegies and lamentations were created, in which Al-Andalus became a mythical, lost paradise. The poet found solace only in prayer, and the result of his spiritual search are wonderful liturgical works that have been permanently included in Sephardic prayer books.

Ibn Ezra boldly combined the rigorous requirements of Arabic meter with the Hebrew tradition of religious poetry, introducing fully strophic and syllabotonic works of extraordinary expressiveness into the synagogue. His work is an excellent testimony of that time in all its complexity. The presented volume shows a cross-section of the work of a poet who is a master of artful form and deep personal reflection.
