A NEW MUSEUM AND THE IMPERMANENT CANON - COLLECTIVE WORK

Discover the fascinating world of contemporary art in the publication "A New Museum and the Impermanent Canon". This unique collective work is not only a catalog of the inaugural exhibition in the new building of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, but also a deep analysis of the role and mission of a museum in turbulent times.

  • Four perspectives on the MSN collection
  • Exploration of the role of the museum of contemporary art
  • Analysis of the tensions between engagement and autonomy
  • Reflections of eminent scientists, critics and curators
  • Considerations on the decolonization of post-socialism
  • Discussions about the relationship between modern art and democracy
  • Examples of the role of art institutions in crises

The curators of the exhibition present their curatorial essays, guided by the belief that works of art and their interaction generate new meanings and help us understand the world. The exhibition focuses on the tension between engagement and autonomy, as well as between popular, life-affirming art and affective art that constructs its own unique universes and languages.

Invited eminent scientists, critics and curators reflect on the very concept of the Museum. Prof. Madina Tlostanova examines the potential of decolonizing post-socialism, Prof. Krzysztof Pomian analyzes the relationship between modern art and democracy, and Laura Raicovich demonstrates, using examples, the role that art institutions can play in profound crises. The volume is complemented by two conversations: one between Claire Bishop, Joanna Mytkowska and Jakub Gawkowski on radical museology and cultural wars (in Poland and the United States) and a second between Swiss academics and curators Fredi Fischli and Niels Olsen and Tomasz Fudala and Natalia Sielewicz on the contemporary mission of museums.

This publication is not only a guide to the exhibition, but also a valuable contribution to the discussion about the role of art and culture in society. It is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary art, museology and the role of cultural institutions in shaping our reality. Let yourself be inspired and immerse yourself in the world of ideas and interpretations offered by "A New Museum and the Impermanent Canon".
