SCREW NOW A THOUSAND DINARS

An engaging and moving novel that takes the reader to the heart of the conflict in the Balkans. A story full of absurdities, tragedy and black humor, showing the war from the perspective of ordinary people caught in the gears of history. A book that forces reflection on the senselessness of war and universal values.

  • Brilliant dialogues masterfully capturing the realities of the conflict.
  • An exceptional anti-war tragic farce compared to the classics of the genre.
  • A gallery of twelve heroes representing different nationalities and religions.
  • Dynamic action full of comedies of errors and surprising twists.
  • Sharp characterizations and a complex plot construction.
  • Universal message showing the absurdity of every war.
  • A novel full of anecdotes and jokes with Bosnian humor.

The action of "Screw Now a Thousand Dinars" - the cult novel by Boris Dežulović - takes place in one day of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the summer of 1993, a six-member group of Croatian soldiers from a special unit sets out on a secret operation to bypass the Muslim front line and thwart the construction of a road being built for Bosnian war needs. At the same time, from the opposite side, a six-member unit of the Bosnian Army of BiH sets out on a similar mission. The commanders of both units come up with the idea that disguising themselves in the uniforms of enemy troops will help the soldiers accomplish their task. A chance meeting of both groups takes place on a hot Sunday in August in the village of Muzaferove Kuće. Dežulović - a master of brilliant dialogues - created an exceptional anti-war tragic farce, which can undoubtedly be compared to classics of the genre such as "Paragraph 22" by Joseph Heller.

The gallery of twelve heroes (the most ordinary representatives of their generation), unsuccessfully trying to determine who is "ours" and who is "foreign", the constant comedy of errors and the avalanche of hilarious situations, the barracks language, the dynamic action, the sharp characteristics of all characters and other people who led the soldiers to the place where they found themselves, and the excellently thought-out construction are the main assets of the Croatian writer's novel. The reader simultaneously follows the main thread and the intertwined subplots, getting to know the life stories and family relations of each of the heroes, as well as the relationships between them - young people of different nationalities and religions, connected by a common past, often by their place of residence and surprisingly many mutual friends.
