The name metaphysics arose by chance, thanks to Andronicus of Rhodes, who, when arranging Aristotle's writings, placed a collection of XIV books after Physics. In these books, Aristotle considered the subject and purpose of philosophy, substance, the first cause, the first mover, the first principles and causes. Andronicus called this collection "books on metaphysics", i.e. "ta meta ta physika". Over time, the term metaphysics became established as a term for Aristotle's philosophy, which deals with the search for the first causes and essential properties for concrete, existing things given to us in empirical experience.
This publication is a valuable contribution to understanding the beginnings of European philosophy, presenting two fundamental approaches to the interpretation of reality. Monism, which assumes the unity of substance, and dualism, which distinguishes two separate substances (e.g. soul and body), are discussed in a historical and philosophical context. The authors analyze the arguments of supporters and opponents of both positions, showing their influence on the development of European thought.
The "Metaphysics Notebooks" are not only an academic textbook, but also an invitation to reflect on one's place in the world. Is reality uniform, or is it made up of elements independent of each other? The answer to this question remains open, and reading this publication may be the first step in finding it. The publishing house of the Polish Society of St. Thomas Aquinas ensures a high editorial and substantive level of publications, which makes them a valuable source of knowledge for anyone who wants to delve into the secrets of philosophy.
