"Desire" is one of the most famous works of the distinguished English philosopher and publicist. It is a philosophical story about human sexuality, its manifestations in culture, and related social and political controversies, full of references to art and literature. This book is an attempt to understand sexual desire as a phenomenon unique only to humans. Although written from the point of view of analytical philosophy, its goal has a broader cultural significance, namely to provide a comprehensive response to the libertarian morality that gained a dominant position in the sixties of the last century and continues to this day.
This morality, responsible for destroying the norms of sexual behavior in the form in which they were understood by previous generations, has created a new type of society. It is characterized by the fact that more and more children are born out of wedlock or killed before birth; marriages are becoming less frequent and divorces have become more likely than ever before; homosexuality has been recognized as the norm, and pedophilia, although still generally condemned, is secretly promoted. This society is obsessed with sex, but at the same time has trivialized it, reducing it to a pleasant sensation that an individual can achieve in any way.
We are increasingly less aware of the true power of sexual passion, in which two people completely give themselves to each other and become one. The new sexual morality has not only shaken society and threatened its reproduction, but has also undermined one of our most inspiring ideals, thanks to which in previous generations countless individuals gave meaning to their lives. Reflecting on these amazing losses, I decided to write this book as an appreciation for an experience that my generation, striving for it and achieving it only in an uneducated and impermanent form, finally rejected.
