PUBLIC FINANCES AND NEW ECONOMIC GOVERNANCE IN THE EU
This book is an attempt to assess the extent to which the New Economic Governance in the European Union has helped to discipline public finances in the member states. The authors point out the weaknesses of the institutional foundations of the functioning of the European Union, which have exacerbated the adverse phenomena in the real and fiscal spheres during the financial crisis. The strategies of fiscal consolidation of the member states have been assessed. The policy of austerity as a method of consolidating public finances and the associated non-Keynesian effects of fiscal policy have been critically analyzed. The methods of disciplining public finances in countries such as Germany, Great Britain, Hungary and Poland are discussed in detail. The characteristic experiences of other member states have also been taken into account in order to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the implemented fiscal consolidation strategies.
