Renata Doniec's book is one of the few pedagogical works that is entirely devoted to the Polish family in the culture of real socialism, with particular emphasis on the 60s and 70s. The author, examining the family in this period, assumed the difficult situation of the family in cultural terms, including socio-psychological aspects, which influenced its perception and valuation in social awareness and determined development and educational opportunities.
For several decades of real socialism, the family was in conditions of a specific cultural dualism, which was an expression of the conflict and inconsistency of the axionormative system present in the culture of the Polish People's Republic. This dualism consisted in the simultaneous functioning of society in two layers, i.e. in the layer of official rules (created by propaganda, ideological indoctrination, education) and in the layer of unofficial rules (i.e. spontaneous adaptation and defense measures applied to the living conditions imposed from above).
In this work, these layers are defined - after Jan Lutyński - as official super-reality and everyday reality. In the first, the family was obliged to function in accordance with the principles of real socialism, the Marxist concept of the family and the requirements of propaganda, and in the second, life according to the realities of everyday life, i.e. in conditions of shortages, mediocrity, temporality and lack of hope for change (i.e. in survival conditions). Each of these layers was governed by different laws and rules, had a different vision of the world, and even used a different language. The simultaneous functioning in these two realities led to numerous psychologically difficult situations and led to crises, distortions in the mental, cognitive and moral sphere, as well as shaping passive and submissive attitudes.
