Bruno Schulz never reached Paris, although he spent over three weeks in that city in the summer of 1938. During this time, he made contact with artists living and working in Paris. He met with Lille, Brzękowski, probably also with Weingart. He spoke with the art dealer Rotgm. He saw Aronson, Basler, Szalit, and perhaps also Marcoussis. This experience had a great influence on his further work, opening him up to new perspectives and inspirations.
In Paris, the city of new artistic and philosophical ideas, many artists lived and worked at that time who orbited in the same circles as Schulz. Much connects Schulz with Bataille, but Schulz probably did not hear about Bataille, just as he did not hear about Artaud, who published the Manifesto of the Theater of Cruelty in the late 1930s. Schulz was in Paris, but Paris did not notice Schulz. The artist and writer from Drohobycz lacked not so much the knowledge of the French language, but what a kind friend called selbstbewut: self-confidence. And even more what could be described as a spirit of conquest.
This collective work is an attempt to understand the phenomenon of Schulz and his work in the context of the era and artistic explorations. The authors analyze his works, showing their depth and complexity, and their influence on contemporary literature and art. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to explore the secrets of the work of one of the most outstanding Polish writers.
