Kolyma, an area in the far north of Russia, became a symbol of suffering and death during the times of Stalinist terror. The camps, subordinate to the NKVD, were established in the early 1930s after the discovery of rich natural resources. Coal, platinum, uranium, oil, and even gold - all of this was to be extracted by the hands of prisoners, condemned to inhuman labor and hunger.
The first prisoners arrived in Kolyma in February 1931. In the early years of the camps' operation, the mortality rate among prisoners reached 80%. The harsh climate, poor living conditions, and work interrupted only at -54°C made Kolyma a place of horror. Prisoners who were particularly dangerous to the Soviet authorities were sent there, including many Poles.
Sebastian Warlikowski's book is a collection of accounts of those who survived this hell. The text was written with emotion from old manuscripts and handwritten testimonies. Reproductions of letters, souvenirs, and documents that remained in the archives are also published. This is an extremely important testimony of history, which allows us to understand the enormity of the tragedy that befell Poles in Soviet labor camps.
