"Innocent at Nuremberg" is a literary testimony from the trial of the greatest criminals of the Third Reich. Seweryna Szmaglewska, the author of the book "Dymy nad Birkenau", is summoned to testify before the International Tribunal in Nuremberg. There were only two witnesses from Poland. She alone was to present the truth about Auschwitz-Birkenau. To tell what is unspeakable to this day. To accuse the criminals who tried to prove their innocence at all costs and to fight for justice in a place that no longer wanted to settle the past. The edition contains fragments of the most important reviews about the book and the full text of the author's testimony given in the Nuremberg trial.
Seweryna Szmaglewska, a writer and the only Polish woman testifying at the Nuremberg trial, shows the confrontation with those who signed genocidal orders from behind a desk. Her reckoning with Nuremberg is all the more shocking because it is made by a witness who could not have dreamed in her darkest dreams that she would ever face the tormentors. Marian Podkowiński emphasizes that this confrontation is the most shocking element of the novel, written in a restrained, sometimes even intimate style.
Seweryna Szmaglewska (1916–1992) is a writer whose life was marked by war trauma. Arrested by the Gestapo and taken to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, she miraculously escaped death. After escaping the death march, she devoted herself to writing to testify to the truth about those times. Her book "Dymy nad Birkenau" became evidence in the Nuremberg trial. Szmaglewska was for many years the vice-president of the Main Council of ZBoWiD, and for her work she was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art of the 1st degree. Her books, such as "It's Going to Be a Beautiful Day", "Black Feet", "Innocent at Nuremberg" and "Two Sad People", remain an important voice in war literature.
