The Free Gestures publication is the result of a residency by Canadian dancer, performance artist and choreographer of Polish origin, Ula Sickle. The exhibition, which the book accompanies, is a choreographic experience activated by a group of dancers who, for five hours each day of the institution's opening, bring to life the idea of free gestures. The starting point is the question of how ideologies are inscribed in our bodies and our language, and the works of art become spoken literary texts, gestures and movements.
The book was created in parallel with the exhibition and subjectively shows the behind-the-scenes work that the viewer usually does not have access to. It presents weeks of rehearsals with the performers and changes taking place in the gallery space. It contains numerous photographs taken by the artist during the work on the project, which allows for an even deeper understanding and appreciation of the creative process. This publication is not only a documentation of the exhibition, but also an independent work that provokes thought and dialogue.
CSW Zamek Ujazdowski, the publisher of the publication, is a renowned cultural institution that has been supporting and promoting contemporary art for years. Their publications are characterized by high editorial and substantive quality, which guarantees that Ula Sickle's Free Gestures is also a noteworthy position. This book is the ideal choice for all art, dance and performance lovers who want to expand their knowledge and experience art in a new, inspiring way.
