Agnieszka Bugała, with journalistic precision, presents a portrait of the Ulm family, who dedicated their simple life to fulfilling God's will. Their faithfulness to the Gospel unexpectedly bore fruit in extremely dangerous conditions. It was their starting point in making decisions. Without calculation and without risk assessment when it came to helping another human being. The Ulms, called the Merciful Samaritans from Markowa, can today be a model for us of simple, everyday and persistent fulfillment of God's will: "He who is faithful in very little is also faithful in much" (Lk 16, 10).

The war lasted, the terror increased, the hunger was getting bigger and bigger, and Wiktoria and Józef Ulm did not lose heart and continued to radiate love. They already had six children when they took into their home eight people sentenced to death by the German occupiers because they were Jews. Who could say then that they had really done everything to save their neighbor? What gave the Ulms strength? What did they draw hope from? What did they bet on? In you, Lord, I have trusted, I will not be ashamed forever. Beautiful words, easy to sing, but how to live with them? The author asks the most difficult questions and looks for answers - she reviews documents, talks to witnesses, considers arguments. It shows an extraordinary, beautiful, difficult and fulfilled life. A model for us and for the whole world. For all time.

Almost all Poles have already heard about and appreciated the heroic and even heroic attitude of the Ulm family. This book answers the extremely important question: why did they do it? Why did they sacrifice themselves for others? What is the key to such attitudes? This is also very important today. In times when most people value their own comfort more than mercy. Agnieszka Bugała - born in 1976, wife and mother of three children. A graduate of Polish philology at the University of Wrocław. Journalist, from 2004 to 2020 editor of the Catholic weekly "Niedziela", associated with the Aleteia portal. Author of books, includingDon't waste time. Primate Wyszyński to young people, Build with Orzech, Secret of holiness. Biography of the Servant of God Sr. Leonii Nastał.She lives and works in Wrocław. The beatification ceremony of Józef and Wiktoria Ulm and their seven children will take place on September 10, 2023 in Markowa. The entire family was shot on March 24, 1944 for helping and sheltering persecuted Jews. Wiktoria was heavily pregnant at the time of the execution. By including the youngest, still unborn child of the Ulms in the beatification together with the parents and siblings, the Church confirms the teaching that human life begins at the moment of conception. It is also the first beatification of an unborn child in the history of the Church.
