Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, winner of the Paszport Polityki and representative of Poland at the 59th Venice Art Biennale, is subjecting her work to such a comprehensive analysis for the first time. Her works, made of materials and clothing, create monumental installations, paintings, and collages that touch on important themes of the transnational identity of contemporary Roma and their history in Poland. The artist reaches back to her roots to tell about private, family life, completely unknown to strangers, thus opposing anti-Roma stereotypes and prejudices.
The album contains reproductions of works by artists from previous eras who painted Roma as figures from the criminal world, sexualized or exoticized. Mirga-Tas opposes these ideas by telling a different story, showing private, family life, completely unknown to strangers. Researchers and art critics in their introductory texts refer to the fate of the Roma during the Holocaust, their life after the war, and their settlement in Nowa Huta. However, the themes related to the work of Małgorzata Mirga-Tas herself come to the fore, placing it in an artistic, political, and social context, applying, among others, a postcolonial, feminist, and ecological filter.
The richly illustrated publication contains 50 reproductions of works by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, reproductions of works by other artists, and photos from the exhibition. The album has 240 pages, a format of 237x278 mm, and a hardcover binding. It was published in 2022 by the International Cultural Center. This is a unique opportunity to delve into the work of one of the most important contemporary Polish artists, whose works move hearts and minds, provoking reflection on identity, history, and stereotypes.
