Yusef Komunyakaa, born in Louisiana in 1947, is the author of nearly twenty volumes of poetry. His innovative approach to African American culture and tradition was recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for the volume "Neon Vernacular" (1993). Komunyakaa is also the author of essays, poetic dramas, and opera librettos. He has collaborated with visual artists and jazz musicians and has taught at many American universities.
Komunyakaa's poetry is organically linked to jazz and blues. In his poems, we find swinging rhythms, syncopation, and subcutaneous energy characteristic of black music. It is autobiographical poetry in which the poet tells about his childhood in the South, about the situation of African Americans, and about the nightmare of the Vietnam War, where he served as a war correspondent. His poems illustrate the universal dimension of human experience.
For the Polish reader, the numerous Polonica in Komunyakaa's work may be of particular interest. The poet has visited Poland many times, as evidenced by poems inspired by the Panorama of Racławice, the sculptures of Hasior, and the murdered professors of the Jagiellonian University and anonymous victims of the Holocaust. The poetry collection "Blue Hour" is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the poetry of one of the most important contemporary American poets.
Wizerunkowe Publishing presents the "Blue Hour" in an elegant hardcover. The volume has 176 pages and a format of 233x156 mm. It is a must-read for lovers of poetry and African American culture.
