The process orientation of supply chain management is based on an integrated approach that combines regulatory activities carried out in a routine and mechanistic manner with an informal and creative approach to organizational learning and skills development.

The integrated approach consists in recording and explaining the stages in the management process, while taking into account personality and axiological factors that are of particular interest to the behavioral current. According to the integrated approach, the stages of the supply chain management process do not necessarily proceed in a specific order, sequentially and linearly, but overlap each other and may occur simultaneously and in different orders. The course of the management process depends on the conditions prevailing in a specific decision-making situation.

As a result of combining the normative and behavioral approaches, this concept is saturated with values that refer to integration as its constitutive feature of supply chain management. In order to discuss the interaction of the normative and behavioral approaches in supply chain management, the concept of the edge of chaos was used. According to the position adopted in the book, awareness of the existence and the ability of the supply chain to oscillate on the edge of chaos is the result of applying the integrated approach in supply chain management.
