Georges Sorel (1847-1922) was an extremely colorful and controversial figure. His thought oscillated between philosophy and engineering, Nietzsche and Marx, Bergson and Goethe. Both Benedetto Croce and Stanisław Brzozowski dealt with him. Sorel, a socialist and syndicalist, never participated in any revolutionary movement, but considered himself an heir to Marx's thought. Leszek Kołakowski even called him the Luther of Marxism. He was a utopian socialist in the best sense of the word.
In "Illusions of Progress," Sorel, with the Marxist idea of historical determinism in mind, largely distances himself from it. He argues that there is no historical necessity that would guarantee the historical victory of socialism. In addition, Sorel has no illusions about the revolutionary spirit of the working class. He believes that the revolution carried out by this class will only lead to a change in the organization of production. Sorel, as the title suggests, is completely devoid of illusions about what the post-revolutionary order in the world will look like. Probably these theses caused him to be classified by socialist orthodoxy not only as a pest, but even as a fascist.
