ILLUSIONS OF PROGRESS - GEORGES SOREL

Immerse yourself in the fascinating analysis of the thought of Georges Sorel, a French philosopher and sociologist who questioned historical determinism and the revolutionary zeal of the working class. His "Illusions of Progress" is a thought-provoking read for anyone who wants to understand the complexity of social and political processes.

  • Critical analysis of the idea of progress
  • Insightful look at the role of revolution
  • Original interpretation of Marxist thought
  • Inspiring reading for intellectuals
  • Classic of social thought

Georges Sorel (1847-1922) was an extremely colorful and controversial figure. His thought oscillated between philosophy and engineering, Nietzsche and Marx, Bergson and Goethe. Both Benedetto Croce and Stanisław Brzozowski dealt with him. Sorel, a socialist and syndicalist, never participated in any revolutionary movement, but considered himself an heir to Marx's thought. Leszek Kołakowski even called him the Luther of Marxism. He was a utopian socialist in the best sense of the word.

In "Illusions of Progress," Sorel, with the Marxist idea of historical determinism in mind, largely distances himself from it. He argues that there is no historical necessity that would guarantee the historical victory of socialism. In addition, Sorel has no illusions about the revolutionary spirit of the working class. He believes that the revolution carried out by this class will only lead to a change in the organization of production. Sorel, as the title suggests, is completely devoid of illusions about what the post-revolutionary order in the world will look like. Probably these theses caused him to be classified by socialist orthodoxy not only as a pest, but even as a fascist.

The book "Illusions of Progress" is a must-read for anyone interested in philosophy, sociology and the history of ideas. It allows you to understand the complexity of social and political processes and to take a critical look at the idea of progress. It is a reading that forces you to think and question established patterns. The 2022 edition, in paperback, has 240 pages and is 197x138 mm in size. It was published by vis-a-vis Etiuda.
