In Tre Fontane, at the gates of Rome, on April 12, 1947, Mary appeared to three children, but they only saw her moving her lips. Then also their father, the sectarian and violent Bruno Cornacchiola, saw Mary and heard her voice, ecstatically accepted her message, and then converted to the Catholic faith. On December 9, 1949, at an audience with Pius XII, Bruno handed the Pope a dagger with which he had long planned to murder him. The Holy Father accepted the message from Tre Fontane as a sign he had been waiting for, and on November 1, 1950, proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven and allowed the construction of a sanctuary at the site of the apparitions.

When on May 13, 1991, John Paul II went to Fatima, thanking for the fall of Soviet communism, he turned to his friend, Cardinal Andrzej Maria Deskur, to celebrate Mass at the same moment in the grotto where Bruno Cornacchiola had seen the Mother of God. Believing in the importance of this place for future generations, in 1997, on the fiftieth anniversary of the apparitions, John Paul II gave the sanctuary the name "Mother of God of the Third Millennium".
