In his monumental biography, Krzysztof Łapiński places the figure of Socrates in the rich cultural context of Greek history, politics, art and literature. He not only tells about the main character, but also vividly recreates the times in which the Athenian philosopher lived. It is the story of a man whose fate is intertwined with the history of ancient Athens, the city that sentenced him to death.
Why did Socrates evoke such extreme emotions in Athens? What original contribution did Socrates make to philosophy and why was he sentenced to death? These are just some of the questions answered in this panoramic biography, where philosophy, love, politics and war intertwine. This book is not only a biography of Socrates, but also a fascinating journey back in time to ancient Athens, the city that gave the world democracy and philosophy.
